Up to 1995, 90% of children diagnosed with cancer in Guatemala did not survive since no entity specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of children afflicted with cancer had yet been created. For this reason the Ayúdame a Vivir Foundation was created on May 29, 1997. The Foundation is a non-governmental, non-profit community service and outreach Institution responsible for carrying out fund-raising activities for providing treatment to cancer-afflicted children throughout the country, being the National Pediatric Oncology Unit the executing entity. Owing to the endeavor of its founding members and directors, as well as to the goodwill of a group of Guatemalans, national and international institutions, on April 3, 2000, the National Unit of  Pediatric Oncology started its operations to serve the Guatemalan people as the first multi-disciplinary medical entity specialized in the care of cancer-afflicted children and youngsters. The Ayúdame a Vivir Foundation has been granted legal capacity under Government Resolution No. 908-98 as published in the Central America Official Gazette on December 11, 1998. As a service institution, it has been duly registered in the Civil Registry as well as in the Superintendency of Tax Administration.
